Best Manual Juicer in 2020

by David Wright | Last Updated on January 14, 2020

Manual juicer

The Health and Wellness Industry has grown dramatically over the last decade, to the point where it is now three times larger than the all-powerful pharmaceutical industry globally. New product lines are sprouting daily, and markets which take off in any meaningful way immediately become saturated with imitations and alternatives. This is true of the manual juicer industry, which after seeming dead following the introduction of electric juicers, has been given a second life.

A choice for consumers in this space has never been better, but by the same token, deciding on which product will best suit your needs has never been harder. From cheap and simple mechanisms to more advanced devices, there is a manual juicer to meet almost all needs and budgets.

So why should you choose a manual juicer over an electric one? Manual juicers work entirely on muscle power, so there are far fewer moving parts. This means that there are fewer parts that can break, and the machine as a whole is much easier to clean than an electric machine.

They are silent compared to the loud grinding of electric juicers and they are also, generally speaking, easier to transport around should you want to maintain your healthy diet on the road. They also take up less space in the kitchen than bulky electric juicers. Manual juicers are generally cheaper than electric options, and surprisingly have been shown to actually create juice that retains more nutrients than electric options which filter out some of the goodness.

1. PortoFino Multi Citrus Juicer

The first product we will review is the PortoFino Multi Citrus Juicer. A simple and sleek design, that allows you to easily squeeze your citruses and collect the juice below. The juicer comes with 2 parts: the collection bowl, and the reamer which fits right on top. If you are lucky enough to have access to large oranges or blood tangerines, the bonus large reamer will be very useful.

Having only two parts, it is very easy to clean and dishwasher compatible. It is compact, cheap and modern in design, and for the beginner juicer, it is a very good choice. Whilst this product has some particularly nice qualities, there are thousands of similar, very cheap options filling the market.

There are some limitations to this product as a juicer. The fact that it is only capable of juicing citruses is a severe limitation, and it can be somewhat time consuming and laborious if you want to juice anything more than a small glass of juice. However, for those you are new to the juicing game, this product is a great way to test out manual juicing before you move on to a more advanced option.

2. Ovos Citrus Juicer

The Ovos Citrus Juicer is another good, cheap option for beginners. Ergonomically designed long handles allow the user to put maximum pressure on the fruit to extract as much juice as possible. Furthermore, the Ovos Citrus Juicer has no parts that have to fit together and can easily find a home in the top drawer in your kitchen.

Made out stainless steel, the handles will not bend under pressure and will not rust. In fact, this may be the last juicer you ever need to buy. Although the juicer doesn’t have any form of collection bowl, it would also be useful when cooking to directly squeeze lemon juice into dishes.

That said, there are still some disadvantages to this juicer. It too can only be used citrus fruits, and it is only ideal for producing single serves of juice at it only juices half a piece of fruit at a time.

The way the health and wellness industry has grown recently, the market is very price competitive. Starting with a cheap citrus juicer such as the ones we have just discussed before moving onto one of the more advanced, but still reasonably priced, manual juicers is a great idea. After all, there is no more refreshing and energising way to start your day than enjoying a glass of your own, hand crafted fruit juice. Some more advanced manual juicers are listed below.

3. Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor

If you’re past the beginner’s stage of manual juicing, you’ll want to purchase a larger juicer that will allow you to effortlessly produce juice by the cupful. The Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor is a reasonably priced, durable juicer made entirely of cast iron. As soon as you see to Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor, you get the feeling it will not break easily.

Lauded by users for its durability and ease of use, this juicer makes it possible to do your whole week’s juicing in one sitting on the weekend. It can handle any size of citrus and it is also designed to juice larger fruits such as grapefruits and pomegranates, allowing you to create delicious and varied combinations of juices.

This kind of juicer will naturally take up more space and may be a bit heavier and less conducive to transporting around with you, but for its price, it is a very strong performer.

4. New Star Foodservice Commercial Citrus Juicer

Featuring a large, cast iron base with suction cups, the New Star Foodservice Commercial Citrus Juicer is all about allowing the user to mass produce juice is a short period of time. As the name suggests, this juicer is suitable for commercial juice production, but is also great for people who are looking to incorporate the benefits of juice into their diets every day. The long rubber handle lets users easily operate the powerful clamp to create a whole glass of orange juice in just 30 seconds.

Due to its cast iron construction, this juicer will never leave your kitchen, so it’s not ideal if you want to have a juicer you can take with you. This juicer is also primarily a citrus juicer.

5. Lexen Healthy Juicer (GP27)

So far, we have talked exclusively about fruit juicers, but if you are truly dedicated to the juicing lifestyle, there is no reason why you shouldn’t juice leafy green vegetables as well. This is where the Lexen Healthy Juicer comes in. This device actually specialises in grinding the juice out of wheat grass, spinach, lettuce and kale.

However, thanks to its strong stainless-steel construction, it can also handle citruses like most other juicers, but also hardy fruits like apples and pears. As far as flexibility goes, the Lexen Healthy Juicer has it all. Moreover, ease of use is a real focus for the Lexen Healthy Juicer.

The device has a suction cup on the base, and a clamp, so that it holds in place while you turn the lever and create delicious, nutritious juice.

As you’d expect, the stainless-steel build and clamping features mean that this device is not the most transportable juicer going around. That said, its ability to mass produce a wide variety of juices means you should be able to make plenty of juice to take with you wherever you go.

6. Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press

If you are after flexibility, power and quality, the Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press is for you. It is capable of juicing any fruit or vegetable going around thanks to its tremendous power. It is extremely durable and made of high-quality materials, as well as being well made and unlikely to falter.

With such quality comes a high price tag, and the Jupiter Commercial Juice Press is certainly on the higher end of the price spectrum. If you are committed to long-term juicing, it is an investment worth making, but if not, you would be best advised to start with a cheaper alternative before moving on to what is a luxury item.

7. Chef’s Star Manual Hand Crank Single Auger Juicer

The Chef’s Star Manual Hand Crank Single Auger Juicer is only the second of juicers we have discussed that uses a crank as opposed to a press, making it a very easy to use the machine. Further, the suction cup on the base of the juicer prevents it from moving around as you’re trying to use it. As all the pieces of the juicers detach, it is also very easy to clean. It is also very reasonably priced.

Perhaps the only downside to the Chef’s Star Manual Hand Crank Single Auger Juicer is its construction. Unlike other juicers which are made of durable materials such as cast iron or stainless-steel, the Chef’s Star is mainly made of plastic, making it somewhat reducing its lifespan. This construction also means that the juicer is limited to juicing grasses and leafy greens and is likely not suitable for fruits and vegetables.

If you are willing to accept these limitations, this juicer is a very reasonably priced option.

Buyer’s Guide

Now that we have looked at a range of manual juicers, the table below breaks them down into categories, showing which juicers best meet certain needs.

Flexibility Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press, Lexen Healthy Juicer
Quantity of Juice New Star Foodservice Commercial Citrus Juicer, Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor, Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press
DurabilityJupiter Large Commercial Juice Press, Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor

As the table shows, all of the juicers have their own strong points. Naturally, if price is your main concern, the hand held citrus juicers will be the best option for you, however if you’re looking for ease of use and long-term durability, the Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press cannot be beat. This juicer is, however, the most expensive. On the other hand, the Chef’s Star Manual Hand Crank Single Auger Juicer is limited to juicing grasses and watery vegetables, and its plastic frame is not particularly well equipped to deal with larger, stronger fruits or vegetables. It is, however, far more affordable.

Any of the press juicers are best suited to producing large quantities of juice, but when it comes to flexibility, the Jupiter Large Commercial Juice Press or the Lexen Healthy Juicer is far and away the best option. Its ability to deal powerfully with fruits and vegetables is unsurpassed.

Most buyers are looking for a juicer which is competitively priced, and ticks most of the boxes. For this, the third, fourth and fifth products we have discussed, the Switol Pro Juice Press Extractor, the New Star Foodservice Commercial Citrus Juicer and the Lexen Healthy Juicer are your best bets. They are not absolute market leaders in any one category, but they are durable and reliable which is exactly what most juice drinkers will be after.

When buying your new manual juicer, there are a few tips which can help you save a little bit of cash. Make sure you shop around both in store and online, remembering to factor in shipping to the price. Shipping costs will often be quite high for manual juicers because they can be quite heavy, so sales which offer free shipping are especially valuable to buyers.

It is also a good idea to wait for Christmas and Thanksgiving sales, as well as other annual sales, as manual juicers are exactly the type of product on which savings are usually offered.

Conclusion

It is clear that manual juicing is on the rise. It is a great way to add nutrition to your diet, or to act as a delicious supplement or even replacement for meals. For this reason, it is ideal for those looking to go on a diet. Manual juicing, as opposed to electric alternatives, have been shown to retain more nutrients in the juice, and is an overall more enjoyable way of making juice.

With a wide array of options on the market, it is incumbent on the buyer to thoroughly investigate what their individual needs are, and which alternative will best meet these needs. Deciding upon which device to buy is a totally individual choice. The key questions are what your budget is and whether you want to just juice citruses, or if you want to also juice other fruits, vegetables and even leafy greens and grasses. If in doubt, start with a simple handheld citrus juicer before moving up.

Happy Juicing!
